Teen Programs

Jewish learning doesn’t end with Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Teen years are crucial for staying involved in Jewish life, and exploring issues of personal identity, values, religious awareness, and community.

Madrichim Program

For 8th-12th graders, TBO offers a madrichim, or teacher’s aide, program, where students learn leadership skills as they assist teachers in the K-7th grade religious school, and become mentors to younger children.

8th-12th Grade Teen Learning Programs

Temple Beth Orr’s Religious School program is from Kindergarten through 12th grade. The expectation is that all our students will continue their Jewish learning with us until they finish high school. Each age group has a program tailored to their needs.

Kesher (8th and 9th Grades)

Taught by Rabbi Rappaport, this program meets twice monthly over Sunday lunch and involves discussion of matters of concern to young teens.

Confirmation (10th Grade)

A powerful and engaging year of personal Jewish growth and no-holds-barred adult discussion with Rabbi Rappaport. The class is discussion-based and focuses on topics that students may have wondered about, but have never before had the opportunity to delve into deeply:

→ How do I make wise decisions in ethical dilemmas that face me as an older teen?
→ What do I believe theologically?
→ What is the difference between Jewish denominations?
→ How might I be Jewish once I'm out of my parents' home?
→ What is the relevance to me of Israel and current events?

A highlight of the year is a trip to DC with a few hundred other Jewish teens from around the country to learn how to make their voices heard by top government officials. This year ends with a beautiful Confirmation service designed by the class around a theme of their choice.

Post-Confirmation (11th and 12th Grade)

This is an informal group discussion with Rabbi Rappaport over dinner that meets periodically over the course of the school year.
